My Journey Growing Mangelwurzel (Red Russian Beet)

As I sit here in my garden, surrounded by the vibrant colors of nature, I am reminded of the simple joys of growing my own food. One of my favorite crops to grow is the Mangelwurzel, also known as Red Russian Beet. In this article, I will take you through my journey of growing this delicious and nutritious root vegetable from seed to harvest.

Getting Started

It all began with a small packet of Mangelwurzel seeds that I purchased from a local nursery. I had heard of this variety before, but had never grown it myself. I was excited to give it a try and see how it would perform in my garden. Before I could plant the seeds, I made sure to prepare the soil. I chose a spot that received full sun and had well-draining soil. I added a layer of compost to the soil to give it a boost of nutrients.

Planting the Seeds

The day finally arrived to plant the seeds. I carefully followed the instructions on the packet and sowed the seeds about 1 inch deep and 1 inch apart. I then covered the seeds with a thin layer of soil and watered them well. I made sure to keep the soil consistently moist during the first few weeks after planting.

Thinning the Seedlings

About a week after planting, I started to notice that the seedlings were starting to grow. However, I knew that I needed to thin them out to give the remaining seedlings enough space to grow. I carefully removed the weakest seedlings, making sure not to damage the surrounding plants.

Providing Support

As the plants continued to grow, I started to notice that they were starting to top out. This was a sign that they needed support to keep them upright. I used a trellis to provide the necessary support for the plants. This allowed me to make the most of my space and keep the plants from becoming too leggy.

Watering and Mulching

Consistent moisture is essential for the growth of Mangelwurzel. I made sure to water the plants regularly, but not too much. Overwatering can lead to root rot and other problems. I also applied a layer of mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pest and Disease Management

As the plants continued to grow, I started to notice some pests and diseases. Aphids and slugs were a common problem, but I was able to manage them using organic methods. I also kept an eye out for signs of disease such as yellowing leaves and black spots.

Harvesting

After about 100 days of growth, I was finally ready to harvest my Mangelwurzel. I carefully dug around the plants, making sure not to damage the roots. I then lifted the beets out of the ground and washed them clean. The result was a beautiful, vibrant red beet with a sweet, earthy flavor.
